This interdisciplinary project integrates fashion studies and city planning knowledge to investigate Black femininity and place in Los Angeles, California. In city planning, Black femininity is often ignored, yet beauty culture is tied to how Black women engage in mobility and place-making. Using a mixed methods approach, we explore Black femininity’s connections and implications on policies and place-making. 

This study explores the relationship between beauty and identity. Building on qualitative data around Black women’s relationship to beauty, this project attempts to measure the influence of ethnicity, race, gender, sexuality, and age on conceptualizations of beauty, conformity to femininity, and self-objectification beliefs and behaviors.

Our experiments show a correlation between manipulations of perceptions of threat level in order to elicit higher group member contributions and status within a group and analyze the causes of this status effect. These findings were presented at the International Society for Behavioral Ecology.

I will assess the attitudes and policy preferences of Americans toward caregiving for older adults using survey data and in-depth interview data. I will focus on variations across race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and over time. Vignettes will be used to understand when preferences diverge from expectations.

We investigated how juries decide on monetary damages in civil cases through the process of converting gist representations into numerical damage judgments as predicted by Fuzzy-Trace Theory. Since 2016, the project led to an NSF grant as well as 8 peer-reviewed publications and 12 presentations.

Rich’s fellowship enabled a major data collection effort to identify barriers to educational opportunity. A detailed block-level analysis reveals how much and where administrative policies create excess opportunity constraints for marginalized populations nationwide. Several research papers and a follow-up external grant proposal are in progress.

Indigenous farmers in the southeastern US have are regularly left out of discussions of land based practices in Indigenous Studies. This research seeks to amplify the personal experiences, motivations and aspirations of these farmers and their work with heritage and other varieties of corn.

This workshop added and integrated perspectives drawn from ecological systems into the socio-cultural context that defines pluralism, the objectives being: articulation of an enriched concept of pluralism; identification of new and integrated areas of research; and development of a strategy for further research.

If selected for the fellowship, I would devote the time the fellowship offers to exploring the emergence of unusual governance and administrative law regimes in the context of industrial policy.

To combat teacher shortages, a growing number of states are allowing teachers to complete training programs at for-profit companies. This project explores the efficacy of for-profit training programs by examining their impacts on the quantity and quality of teachers in Texas.

Riehl and his coauthors wrote a working paper based on his CCSS fellowship project, which is titled "Community Impacts of Mass Incarceration." The paper is now in the submission process.

Being accused of copying others’ ideas can have significant financial and reputational costs. Using music copyright infringement case data and controlled experiments, we investigate whether the originality of women’s work is more likely to be questioned, with implications for understanding gender inequities in creative industries.

The talks given at this conference affected a publication co-authored by Tolbert in 2012 and also laid the foundation for a 2014 conference that resulted in the special issue of ILR Review. Based on peer reviews, nine papers from the conference were published in a 2016 special issue of the ILR Review, Inequality in the Workplace. Collectively, the papers have received over 300 citations to date.

Remember Girl Zero is a book project in feminist global and Asian history, designed to show how patrilineal norms generate a uniquely feminine form of enslavement, largely invisible both to nineteenth-century abolitionists and to current scholars of slavery.

This study investigates the dynamics of rally-around-the-flag in a nondemocracy, drawing on evidence from Russia's war against Ukraine.

In nondemocracies, protest participation, voting for the opposition, and even abstaining from supporting regime candidates entail risks. This project investigates how risk attitudes shape political participation under authoritarian rule and how ordinary citizens overcome their baseline aversion to taking political risks.

Efficient real world climate policy must be heterogeneous across countries and industries. I will quantify the efficient distribution of carbon taxes and adaptation finance subsidies across the world. These estimates will inform policymakers where financing and capital should be directed to combat climate change.
