Using qualitative semi-structured interviews, this project is an investigation into the destigmatization process families may face via monthly cash benefits as a part of the new expanded Child Tax Credit.

Our experiments show a correlation between manipulations of perceptions of threat level in order to elicit higher group member contributions and status within a group and analyze the causes of this status effect. These findings were presented at the International Society for Behavioral Ecology.

The Covid-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of school governance in local communities as districts’ independent decisions not only affected children’s education, but also adults’ labor force participation. This project examines how the pandemic, and its interaction with community demographics, affected school board election turnout rates.

Using a mixed methods approach, this project systematically examines the landscape of fertility and family leave policies among the largest corporations in the US by surveying Fortune 500 Companies. Investigating the supply side of ART will provide insights on reproductive healthcare access amid rising demand.

This project will use complete student transcript data to map the bipartite (two-mode) network that connects students to each other via their enrollment in college courses, thereby creating social structural conditions for the spread of COVID-19 on college campuses. We will evaluate how clusters of course offerings, the timing of courses throughout the week, and mode of class instruction affect the structure of this network. We will also assess how students with different majors, level in school, gender, and race occupy different positions within the network.

This project explores the “social cohesion paradox” in a disadvantaged Rio de Janeiro community, examining how chronic hardships, particularly recurring floods, foster trust, solidarity, and collective action. Using a mixed-methods approach, it highlights resilience-building processes to inform equitable policies addressing poverty and inequality.

How much will climate change cost? And how will we know? This project explores how experts have constructed climate change as an economic problem and, in particular, how their techniques of valuation have shaped public discourse and policy debates.

Mendoza used semi-structured interviews to uncover the experiences, responses to, and consequences of housing precarity among mixed-status Latinx immigrant families in southern California. The funding helped with a transcription service. Preliminary findings demonstrate that a lack of legal status restricts individuals’ access to and participation in various social and economic benefits, which in turn inhibit their ability to find adequate housing.

Mingo conducted interviews with 22 junior high school students and 11 educators as part of her ethnographic study on schooling and discipline in the rural US South. This research will be presented at the American Sociological Association Annual Meeting in August 2021, and is included in manuscripts in progress.

The fellowship helped laying the groundwork for the analysis of a massive dataset on online behavior during the 2016 US presidential election. Several papers are expected to be published from this project within the next three years. Further, an R package to fit stochastic blockmodels to weighted networks was developed.

I will assess the attitudes and policy preferences of Americans toward caregiving for older adults using survey data and in-depth interview data. I will focus on variations across race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and over time. Vignettes will be used to understand when preferences diverge from expectations.

This project examines whether, how, and the extent to which elite philanthropy legitimates rising inequality and plutocracy. It (1) develops measures of support for plutocracy, (2) establishes overall support for plutocracy, (3) determines effects of philanthropy on support for plutocracy, (4) tests mechanisms, and (5) identifies implications.
