Measuring Familial History of Incarceration

Chris Wildeman and the ISS Mass Incarceration Theme Project Team have obtained a major grant from FWD.US to identify the proportion of Americans who have had a family member incarcerated in jail or prison. It is well known that the U.S. has the highest incarceration rate in the world, yet we do not know how many families are directly affected by the carceral state. This research will generate the first valid estimates of the percentage of Americans who have had a family member incarcerated. The research will also identify how family contact with the criminal justice system varies by demographic group and across states. The first results will be reported in October 2018!
