Defining ‘The People,’ Expanding the Vote

David Bateman, assistant professor of government and current ISS Faculty Fellow, has recently published his new¬†book “Disenfranchising Democracy.” Bateman examines the expansion of voting rights for certain groups as well as the restriction and exclusion of voting rights for other groups in the 19th century. His book is the first to look at the relationship between democratization and the restriction of voting rights across the United States, United Kingdom, and France during the aforementioned time¬†period.
