Aija Leiponen

Professor Leiponen’s teaching and research focus on the sources and effects of technological change in the economy. The overarching goal of her research program is to understand the role of inter-organizational cooperation in innovation. For example, she has examined the collaborative creation and transfer of knowledge between business service firms and their clients, the effects of collaboration on IP strategies of small firms, the decentralization of R&D activities into geographically distinct units, and the cooperative creation of technological standards in wireless telecommunications.

Ongoing projects examine the creation and governance of standards in the emerging smart grid and “big data” industries, and the effects of wireless communication industry consortia on firms’ litigation activities and innovation success.

Her articles have been published in Organization Science, Strategic Management Journal, Management Science and the International Journal of Industrial Organization, among other publications.
