Ithaca/Weill Obesity Workshop
February 26-27 2009
229 ILR Conference Center, Cornell University
Bringing Together Social Science and Medicine to Study Youth Obesity's Causes, Consequences, and Solutions
Overview
This workshop is sponsored by the Institute for the Social Sciences and brings
together obesity researchers on the Ithaca and Weill Cornell campuses, as well
as obesity researchers from elsewhere in New York State. The purpose of this
workshop is to promote collaborative multidisciplinary research on youth
obesity. To that end, this conference will consider research questions such as:
How do biology, society, markets, and the physical environment contribute to
youth obesity? Why, in developed countries, does obesity occur
disproportionately among the socioeconomically disadvantaged? Can the study of
youth obesity be informed by studying conditions and behaviors at the opposite
end of the spectrum, such as anorexia and bulimia? What are the effects of new
obesity prevention programs and weight loss interventions that are being
implemented in schools and by governments? How do different disciplines and
fields view obesity-related behaviors, and what can they learn from each
other?
We are pleased to announce that the keynote speaker is Michael Rosenbaum, Columbia (pediatric endocrinology).
