Obama Administration Issues New Guidance on Fair Housing

hells kitchen“These new guidelines are an important step toward greater equality in housing access,” said Matthew Hall, assistant professor in policy analysis and management.

Hall’s comments are in response to the U.S. Housing and Urban Development’s guidance released on April 4th to address when a housing provider can refuse to rent to someone with a criminal history.

“These new guidelines on how housing discrimination laws will be enforced may seem minor, but given the substantial racial disparities in arrest and conviction, they represent an important step toward greater racial equality in housing access.

The research is clear that high-quality housing and neighborhoods provide important advantages for individuals and their families. These new guidelines by HUD will help to reduce unequal access to these benefits, especially for black and Latino families who have disproportionately been targeted by ‘tough on crime’ policing strategies,” says Hall.
